Cyber security is the protection of computers, networks, programs and data from theft or damage to ensure operating capability, security and use in an efficient manner.
One of the main objectives of cyber security is to protect systems, software and data from unauthorized access, modification or destruction. Cybersecurity has been described as “the new battle ground” with the level of attacks being so high that it has been compared to a “cyber arms race”. As with conventional warfare defenses are being fortified on a regular basis however attackers are becoming more sophisticated in their methods of attack which is seeing an escalation in attack volumes.
Cybersecurity can be applied at multiple levels. Primarily it what is cyber security how it works used in the context of national security against military forces. However it can also be used in non-military scenarios including corporate security or personal computer protection. The term cybersecurity has been in use since the 1980s, when the US military began to use it to describe their own stand on information security.
